NSBHS has earned the Gold Academy Award for the fourth year in a row! Thanks to the hard work of our business partners and our Academy Team of Teachers that work tirelessly to ensure a rich integrated curriculum. Our team of teachers include Kathleen Zois(Academy Director), Lindsay Posick (Instructor), Linda Meehl, Susan Kennedy, Marsha Hannan, and John Scrivano( all from the English Department), Susan Zona, Laura Stark (from our Science Department) and Cliff Weisheimer (Social Studies Department).
Our students’ job shadow experiences with our business partners (Bert Fish Medical Center, Edgewater and NSB Fire Departments ) allow the students real world, hands on experiences. This ensures that our students are able to use the knowledge obtained in the classroom and apply it to medical scenarios in the field. Having to choose from our business partners to receive a recognition award was difficult. Each business partner has done so much for our Academy. Edgewater Fire Department was recognized as our outstanding Business Partner for the 2013-2014 school year.
Paige Kennedy is our Academy Student Ambassador for the 2014-2015 school years. Her enthusiasm for the academy shows as she speaks with other students as well as when she competes in HOSA competitions each year. Paige is a senior who is currently in NSBHS Emergency Medical Responder course. This outstanding young lady is part of our HOSA officer team. She is energetic and brings a noticeable presence to our HOSA meetings that set an example to our members.

On Friday, September 26th, the Medical Academy was able to bring 12 upper classmen to the new Nemours Hospital in Lake Nona, Florida.
We were excited to hear from the staff who have integral positions to ensure that every patient is given optimal healthcare through their facility. Some of the speakers include members from the administration that informed the audience of the foundational basis of the hospital. We heard from the Director of Emergency Medicine, an Orthopedic Surgeon, Ophthalmologist and Radiologist. There are healthcare workers with education degrees whose job it is to make sure that all patients are able to play and express themselves through art and building with Legos! A gentleman in Nemours IT Department sat for a few minutes during the informational lunch session. He explained that each patient has a control panel that is accessible from the hospital beds that control the color of the lights in each room as well as the ability to raise and lower the blinds. This helps the patients have some control of their hospital stay.
This rare opportunity, gave our students wonderful insight into a pediatric healthcare facility. We would like to thank Nemours for opening their doors to our Medical Academy students.
